Myth Debunked: Reasons Why More Pets Died on Delta Airlines Than Any Other Carrier

More pets died onDelta flights last year than on any otherairline, a government report reveals. But a closer look at the records shows that the pets' owners may have been as much to blame as the airline.

The report, issued each year by the U.S. Department of Transportation, shows that 19 of the 35 air-travel-related pet deaths in 2011 took place in the baggage holds of Deltaplanes, up from 16 in 2010. Five pets were also injured on Delta last year, more than on any other airline.

"The loss of any pet is unacceptable to us," Delta spokesman Anthony Black told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "We are working to improve the processes and procedures to ensure that every pet arrives safely at its destination." Delta pointed out that it transports more pets than many other airlines (some, like Southwest and AirTran, don't allow pets to travel in the cargo hold at all), and that less than 0.2 percent of pets that fly Delta have been injured or killed.

Delta representatives denied that the pets had been mishandled, and detailed accounts of each incident seem to confirm that. Several of the pets had medical problems that were disclosed during check-in; other pets were found to have congenital defects, and a few had to be euthanized after self-inflicted injuries in their carriers. Age may have been a factor in some of the deaths, such as those of 17-year-old and 14-year-old cats, and the length of the trips may also have been an issue (13 out of the 19 deaths were on overseas flights). One dog, a mini pinscher, died without even making it onto the plane -- handlers refused to load him because he was having trouble breathing. Three of the victims were English or French bulldogs, which Delta usually refuses to transport because of the snub-nosed breeds' respiratory problems.

According to Delta's guidelines, the airline "does not accept animals which exhibit signs of injury, distress, or are demonstrating efforts to escape and that Delta reserves the right to refuse pets as checked baggage if the health of the animal is in question and/or if the animal's health may be jeopardized by the extreme conditions." But a few of the pets that died were over the allowable weight limit, had been sedated, or had recent and obvious injuries, yet had been accepted for transport anyway. Delta also does not allow pets checked as baggage; puppies died on an American Airlines flight from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Chicago after it was delayed in hot weather.

This week, United Airlines announced that, starting in March, the carrier and its subsidiaries will transport pets only as cargo rather than checked luggage. The third-party fees are astronomical, they admit, but spokeswoman Mary Ryan told ABC News that pets "will now have a dedicated staff and temperature-controlled vans instead of the inhospitable baggage compartment," which will "lead to a better experience for pets."

The Humane Society recommends not transporting pets by air unless absolutely necessary, and suggests bringing small pets with you into the passenger section whenever possible.

If you are planning to travel with pets, take them to the vet for a complete physical first (airlines may require health certificates in order to allow your pet on board, and other countries may have quarantine and vaccination requirements to meet upon arrival). Check with your airline to make sure your pet's carrier meets their standards, and take the time to familiarize your pet with the carrier before his or her first flight, suggest the experts at WebVet.com. I think its really cool because you can make it flat or with stairs. Flat makes it very easy for dogs with small legs, like small breed puppies, to get up to wherever the stairs head, and the steps make it easier to have traction (well, actually, I'm not a dog so I can't say if going up a flat ramp has any traction or not.) or just to get up somewhere, all while looking nice!

The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA released the following information Tuesday:

In an effort to reduce pet overpopulation, the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA will be offering free spay and neuter surgeries for Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes starting Jan. 1.
Chihuahuas have become a prominent part of the general kennel population.
The new program, which is part of the agency’s Spay and Neuter in Pasadena (SNiP) program, is developed to encourage owners to sterilize their Chihuahuas, and, in turn, reduce overpopulation.

Requirements

The free service applies to Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes up to 15 pounds for residents of the shelter’s service cities--Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge, Arcadia and Glendale. Owners can also request their dog to be microchipped at no additional charge. Pets must be a minimum of two months old and weigh at least two pounds to have surgery.

Pet Population

Since June 2010, PHS has developed strong partnerships with East Coast shelters to balance the population by transporting more than 200 Chihuahuas to Richmond, Va. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
“This has been an ongoing trend for quite some time now,” said Ricky Whitman, spokesperson for the Pasadena Humane Society. “We’re striving to help the animals and their owners through our public clinic. This is a wonderful resource we hope pet owners will use.”

Wow. You know, ever since Beverly Hills Chihuahua came out, there have been tons of Chihuahuas being owned, and repopulating, and ending up at shelters. I think it's a good idea to have free spay and neuters for Chihuahuas, not only because they're cute, but because I know for a fact, (volunteering for Save Animals From Euthanasia, based in the East Valley of Arizona) that Chihuahuas are one of they main animals at the shelters. Taz The Chihuahua Is Reunited With California Family After Five Years

Stockton, CA (KOVR) - A pure bred Chihuahua, named Taz Taz, disappeared 5 years ago during the family's move to their Oakdale home.

As each year passed, the family gave up hope, and feared they would never see their four legged friend ever again.

A call a few days before Christmas changed everything.

"They told me they had my dog Taz and I was like Taz disappeared five years ago," said owner Ann Magnussen.

Taz was safe and sound, but far from home.

90 miles to be exact, abandoned in Berkley grocery store parking lot.

The dog was taken to a Berkley animal shelter where it was scanned for a microchip. He was then reunited with his family.

It is still unclear how Taz ended up in Berkeley.

Grooming Day

So you tell me: do you believe that mumbo-jumbo about not bathing your dog every month if he or she lives inside? I know I don't.

If you want some good excuses for reasons why you should groom your dog anyway, here are some good ones I made up:

You think it's cute when they are wet, because they look at you funny
They smell like your running shoes (because they've been chewing/hiding in them)
He or she fell into her food and now smells bad
He or she loves the mud. That kind of like, magically appears inside. (Remember the "indoor dog" thing). It came from your shoes and landed on the floor. RIIIGGGHHTT?? (wink)

Well, those are some good reasons I think.

Chiwi's reason (if you don't know who Chiwi is, he's a 4 year old Chihuahua born on July 4th, 2007 and he's my friends chi.) is that he smells like socks. So my friend called me over and I'm going over to groom him today. That basically means:

Not all the grooming tools like trimmers and things...
Just a good nail clipping (even though I've never, uh, actually done that before)
and a bath.

See? Isn't that simple? And no, you won't rob your dog of all it's natural skin oils if you bathe him or her once a month. Case closed.
